Performing an Electrical Safety Check Before Moving
Reports by the US National Fire Protection Association show that 44,880 homes experience electrical fires causing 1370 injuries and 500 deaths every year.
According to a recommendation by the Electrical Safety Foundation International, you must conduct an electrical inspection of a home before moving into a previously-owned property, as it can help you detect the cause of these fires before they wreak havoc.
Here are 3 things you should look for.
1. Switches and Outlets
Firstly, ensure that all the outlets have three-pronged plugs and that all switches and outlets contain plate covers. If you have toddlers or babies, you'll have to cover all the outlets with outlet plugs. So, count all of the empty outlets.
Secondly, take note of any sign of damage or looseness. Cracked plates and loose switches can put you at risk of fire and electrocution. If there's discoloration or warmth on or around the outlet, don't use it. Call an electrician to check for faulty wiring.
Similarly, if you hear a crackling or buzzing sound coming from an outlet or switch, it could be because of faulty wiring and must be inspected by an electrician immediately.
2. Light Fixtures
Ensure that all wall-mounted or ceiling fixtures are tightly screwed and secure. Don't forget to note the wattage of the fixtures and bulbs. In case the previous owner used a bulb with wattage higher than the fixture could handle, it can overheat and start a fire near any combustible material like paper lamps or wallpaper.
3. Electrical Panel
The circuit breaker and fuses in your home's electrical panel can save you from fires as they prevent your home's electrical system from voltage overload. Ensure that all the fuses are the correct size for the circuit as the wrong size can overheat the wiring.
Make sure that your electrical panel has AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters) installed. They’re a unique kind of circuit breaker that checks for unsafe electrical fluctuations that can lead to fires and tripped circuits. According to the National Electrical Code, depending on different areas in the US, some home requires mandatory AFCI installation.
